Sam Allardyce is yesterday's man... MARTIN SAMUEL
Jurgen Klopp rejected the overtures of West Ham United after handing in his notice at Borussia Dortmund. No matter, it was worth a try. Now on to the next one.

If Rafael Benitez wants to return to English football after leaving Napoli maybe he can be persuaded to take over a project that includes a move to the iconic Olympic Stadium in a year's time. West Ham need a coach of high ambition to underline the size of the venture.

Sam Allardyce isn't that man. He had his chance and did not take it. Allardyce has often talked of the qualities he could bring to an elite club, but the momentum of his season changed on Boxing Day when he left his best players out of the starting line-up at Chelsea, and lost.
The folly of resting key individuals for such an important game over the Christmas period was exposed as West Ham then played two home fixtures, losing to Arsenal and drawing with West Brom.

If West Ham had maintained their form going into the Chelsea game — 31 points from 17 matches — they would now be fifth in the league. Had their form since that day been played out through the season — 12 points from 16 games — they would be bottom.

Allardyce's reputation is that of a man who guarantees survival, but since Christmas West Ham have been playing relegation football. If a new manager is being considered, it is understandable. West Ham must go to the Olympic Stadium with more on their minds than survival.

I was a bit unsure of Benitez when he was mentioned but the more I think of it, and look at his record I wonder what it is I want.

The next stage for this club is to compete and hopefully win some trophies. Of the Managers realisticaly mentioned, he is that stand out in that respect so I have changed my mind and would be more than happy.

Another plus is that Man Utd, Chelsea and Sam Allardyce hate him. A triple win!

Paving the way maybe, or diluting press opinion about the peril that awaits the club post Allardyce.

Good that he nailed that Chelsea thing, he could easily have gone on to dig out Nolan's inclusion as well.

My feeling is that he'll go at the end of the season. Fingers crossed the new man is someone I hate so I can go all Nicey on him and spam up thread after thread.

Would you rather play long ball and win or good football and lose?

Likes a cup and as you say hates Chelsea and their fans. Spends a bit to much maybe but will know the budget and can attract some good players. I think it would be a good appointment for where we are right now.

Benitez is the way to go if we could attract him. With the foreign managers mentioned, he's the only one who appeals to me. He had a strong pedigree, knows a player too.

Relegation form since Christmas.
7 points from relegation last season.
Is he really a safe option as some have said?
Seems more of a gamble to keep him.

He also got lucky last season.

We had that startling run in February that took everyone by surprise. We got all the luck our way in four or five games and it saved us from relegation.

Look at the two periods August-January and March-May in that season and we would have finished bottom.

That's a very different story from clubs that pick up points here and there throughout the season and stay up. Essentially Allardyce got the rub of the green for a few weeks and it saved us (and him, unfortunately).

He's been yesterday's man for years.

This article by Samuel is the best I've read because it sums up succinctly and accurately the way most of us have viewed the Allardyce Stewardship. No exaggerations, no hysteria, no sign of pre conceived dislike simply an objective analysis and conclusion.

As for the reply here by fiddle it seems to him that BFS is allowed to have good luck but there is no such thing as bad luck it's down to incompetence. That will not wash.

We all know that BFS will walk at the end of the season and we don't want him to be hanging around out of contract like CfC only to come back as we fail to land a credible replacement.

Well done Martin Samuel........a WHU supporter.

The point being made here, and the point that should be driven home at every available opportunity, is that Allardyce is in no way a guarantee of Premier League status.

There is a media factoid going around he is, but that's all it is - a consensus opinion and it would be utter folly to rely on it next season.

Once again - Allardyce is more likely do get us relegated next season than anything else.

lazy article imo, benitez klopp etc all know that increased wage bill is the only way to improve a club's league standing, see the stats in the thread the other day, only saints are overachieving.

they're gonna ask for money that g&s haven't got and walk away.

Eactly why i dont want Benitez, we need a manager who can extract everything and more from a set of players, therefore no1 target is Eddie Howe
